From “Happy Thanksgiving” – to “Black Friday” in just a few hours…

I know… It’s the day AFTER Thanksgiving… They call it “Black Friday!” Sounds dark, pessimistic, and negative doesn’t it… And our culture’s answer? … Just go shopping!

Listen, if your perspective is only “this side of heaven” – what goes on “under the sun” – It’s easy to get caught up in the futility and negativism of everything! I’m reading Ecclesiastes in the Bible right now and that is the perspective – trying to figure things out, seeking wisdom, “this side of heaven” – “under the sun.” If you do that, it’s inevitable… Your perspective will be skewed and distorted – you’ll miss the Divine perspective – the perspective with God taken into account!

I think that’s what happened to the writer of Ecclesiastes! If you try to figure things out on your own without God’s perspective, you’ll just see the ultimate futility of everything. Here’s what I read today in Ecclesiastes…

“So I hated life, because what is done under the sun was grievous to me, for all is vanity and striving after the wind. I hated all my toil in which I toil under the sun, seeing that I must leave it to the one who will come after me, and who knows whether he will be wise or a fool? Yet he will be master of all for which I toiled and used my wisdom under the sun! This also is vanity! So I turned about and gave me heart up to despair over all the toil of my labors under the sun, because sometimes a person who has toiled with wisdom and knowledge and skill must leave everything to be enjoyed by someone who did not toil for it. This also is vanity and a great evil!” (From Ecclesiastes 2:17-21)

“Happy Holidays everyone!” You sit down and try to figure it all out on your own and you might end up with the same morbid conclusion!

But here’s God’s perspective…

“God is not so unjust as to overlook your work and the love you showed for His sake” (Hebrews 6:10)

“Be steadfast, immovable, always a bounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain!” (1 Corinthians 15:58)

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.” (Matthew 6:19-20)

“And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the father through Him.” (Colossians 3:17)

And that’s just a few of the verses that give God’s perspective – the divine perspective! I want to see life from that perspective! Don’t you?

It’s Thanksgiving morning and I’m having “coffee with the Lord!”

It’s Thanksgiving morning and I’m having “coffee with the Lord!” He and I have been having a conversation about all the wonderful things He’s done for me… Protection, provision, plenty, promises fulfilled, precious people in my life – but most of all His love, His grace, His salvation! Believe me, I did my best to express my heartfelt thanks for it all!

The words of Psalm 107 came to mind (although it is a bit long I urge you to read it all, especially the words in all caps)…

“OH GIVE THANKS TO THE LORD, FOR HE IS GOOD, FOR HIS STEADFAST LOVE ENDURES FOREVER! LET THE REDEEMED OF THE LORD SAY SO, whom he has redeemed from trouble and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south.

“Some wandered in desert wastes, finding no way to a city to dwell in; hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them. Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He led them by a straight way till they reached a city to dwell in. LET THEM THANK THE LORD FOR HIS STEADFAST LOVE, FOR HIS WONDROUS WORKS TO THE CHILDREN OF MAN! For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things!

“Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, prisoners in affliction and in irons, for they had rebelled against the words of God, and spurned the counsel of the Most High. So he bowed their hearts down with hard labor; they fell down, with none to help. Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and burst their bonds apart! LET THEM THANK THE LORD FOR HIS STEADFAST LOVE, FOR HIS WONDROUS WORKS TO THE CHILDREN OF MAN! For he shatters the doors of bronze and cuts in two the bars of iron!

“Some were fools through their sinful ways, and because of their iniquities suffered affliction; they loathed any kind of food, and they drew near to the gates of death. Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He sent out his word and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction. LET THEM THANK THE LORD FOR HIS STEADFAST LOVE, FOR HIS WONDROUS WORKS TO THE CHILDREN OF MAN! AND LET THEM OFFER SACRIFICES OF THANKSGIVING, AND TELL OF HIS DEEDS IN SONGS OF JOY!

“Some went down to the sea in ships, doing business on the great waters; they saw the deeds of the LORD, his wondrous works in the deep. For he commanded and raised the stormy wind, which lifted up the waves of the sea. They mounted up to heaven; they went down to the depths; their courage melted away in their evil plight; they reeled and staggered like drunken men and were at their wits’ end. Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed. Then they were glad that the waters were quiet, and he brought them to their desired haven. LET THEM THANK THE LORD FOR HIS STEADFAST LOVE, FOR HIS WONDROUS WORKS TO THE CHILDREN OF MAN! LET THEM EXTOL HIM IN THE CONGREGATION OF THE PEOPLE, AND PRAISE HIM IN THE ASSEMBLY OF THE ELDERS!

“He turns rivers into a desert, springs of water into thirsty ground, a fruitful land into a salty waste, because of the evil of its inhabitants. He turns a desert into pools of water, a parched land into springs of water. And there he lets the hungry dwell, and they establish a city to live in; they sow fields and plant vineyards and get a fruitful yield. By his blessing they multiply greatly, and he does not let their livestock diminish.

“When they are diminished and brought low through oppression, evil, and sorrow, he pours contempt on princes and makes them wander in trackless wastes; but he raises up the needy out of affliction and makes their families like flocks. The upright see it and are glad, and all wickedness shuts its mouth. WHOEVER IS WISE, LET HIM ATTEND TO THESE THINGS; LET THEM CONSIDER THE STEADFAST LOVE OF THE LORD.”

Has the Lord done any of these things for you? Has He done anything like that in your life? He certainly has for me – and I’m forever grateful! Com’on join me today in giving thanks to Him from the bottom of your heart!

With God’s help maybe the “Nice Person of the Week” Award might go to YOU!

a-nice-person
Hey, there’s value in being a “nice person” as a Christian! It enhances the power and potency of your testimony! It’s the kind of life the Lord can bless!
In my Bible reading this morning during my time of “coffee with the Lord” I was reminded of that fact. Apostle Peter had just dealt with the responsibilities and behavior of Christians as citizens (1 Peter 2:13-17)… Then he spoke to “servants” about their work ethic (1 Peter 2:18-21 – and what he says applies to employees as well!)… Then the responsibility of wives and husbands within the context of marriage and the home is addressed (2 Peter 3:1-7). But he ends it all up by saying…
“FINALLY, ALL OF YOU, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing.” (1 Peter 3:8–9 ESV)
Christians are called upon to be exceptionally, consistently, kind, gracious, and NICE people! Wouldn’t it be wonderful if it were always that way? Wouldn’t the cause of Christ be furthered? Wouldn’t the “Gospel” have maximized impact? I gotta tell you I want to be that kind of Christian! Don’t you? I know, it will take the grace of God and the fruit of the Holy Spirit to pull it off… But isn’t that who is working in our lives? Hey, we can do this! Maybe the “nice person of the week” award might go to YOU!
