Here’s the issue: Are you going to believe the “scoffers” or Scripture?

eye-roll-scoffer

I guess you gotta decide… Are you going to believe the “scoffers” or Scripture?  I’ve chosen to believe what the Bible says…  (In fact, I think I’ll just let the Bible speak for itself today!  … I read this passage today during “coffee with the Lord.”)…

“Scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires.  They will say, ‘Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.’  They deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God, and that by means of these the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished.  But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.  But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.  THE LORD IS NOT SLOW TO FULFILL HIS PROMISE AS SOME COUNT SLOWNESS, BUT IS PATIENT TOWARD YOU, NOT WISHING THAT ANY SHOULD PERISH, BUT THAT ALL SHOULD REACH REPENTANCE.  But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.  Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn!  BUT ACCORDING TO HIS PROMISE WE ARE WAITING FOR NEW HEAVENS AND A NEW EARTH IN WHICH RIGHTEOUSNESS DWELLS!”  (From 2 Peter 3:1–13 ESV)

Some thoughts about “Getting on God’s nerves… frustrating Him”

Ever get a bit frustrated and weary with some of the behavior of your children? It may be something they do over-and-over-again that you’d like to see changed. Or it might be a recurring (and frustrating) pattern of speech or thought. Negative patterns of behavior, speech and thinking can begin to appear pretty early!
I remember my dad’s deep sigh (and his mumbling about my behavior in German)… I also remember my mother’s “How many times have I told you!”
Well I read something this morning during “coffee with the Lord” that reminded me that I can (and my hunch is… we all can) have patterns of behavior, speech and thought that create a similar “weary” response from out Heavenly Father! Now, I know He’s incredibly patient, but once in a while, I think as my mother would say, “we get on His nerves” (I know that’s a bad analogy, but I think you get the point).
This is what God said, to His covenant people in the Old Testament – those He had redeemed and delivered, making them His very own…
“You have wearied the Lord with your words… by saying, ‘Everyone who does evil is good in the sight of the Lord, and He delights in them.’ (In other words, God doesn’t care what we do or how we live – in the end everyone is ok and he delights in them as His children… Grace covers it all) Or by asking, ‘Where is the God of justice?” (A way of complaining that God is unfair.) (From Malachi 2:17)
It’s a way of behaving, speaking and thinking that is VERY frustrating to God – it displeases Him!!! Believe me, I don’t want to be guilty of it! It does matter to God how I live! God’s grace should never be an excuse for living in sin (Romans 6:1-2, 15; Galatians 5:13; 1 Peter 2:16)! An ungrateful, complaining, thankless attitude also is displeasing to Him! I never want to be guilty of either pattern of behavior! I want to please the Lord, not “weary Him.”

Faithfulness in marriage is a Spiritual matter! It is a covenant issue!

wedding-ringI’ve done a lot of pre-marriage counselling over the years… Also done a lot of counselling with couples desiring to enrich and improve their marriage. And I’ve had to counsel a lot of couples after a failure, helping them to reconcile and try again, or simply “pick up the pieces” or “bandage the wounds and heal” after a divorce. I’ve seen some successes and observed some disappointing failures. In most cases I wished I’d had an opportunity to help them make good decisions, with eyes open and honest hearts, on the front end of their decision to marry.

This morning during “coffee with the Lord” I read a passage that affirmed one of my core values and communicated a word of warning to us all regarding the issue of faithfulness in marriage. In fact, I jotted a comment in the margin of my Bible as a result of reading the passage.

First, my personal, non-negotiable core value (and it is the first of seven I’ve articulated for myself):

1. I value my marriage and family
Faithfulness and fidelity in marriage and family life are infinitely more important to me than any competing human loyalty.

Second, the passage: Malachi 2:14-16 ESV

“The Lord was witness between you and the wife [or husband] of your youth, to whom you have been faithless, though she/he is your companion and your wife [spouse] by covenant. Did He not make you one, with a portion of the Spirit in your union? And what was the one God seeking? Godly offspring. So guard yourselves in your spirit, and let none of you be faithless to the wife [or husband] of your youth. For the man/woman who does not love his wife/husband but divorces her/him, says the Lord, the God of Israel [His covenant people], covers his garment with violence, says the Lord of hosts. So guard yourselves in your spirit, and do not be faithless!” [includes some editorial broadening I’ve added to include both spouses]

Finally, the comment I jotted in the margin of my Bible…

Faithfulness in marriage is a Spiritual matter! It is a covenant issue!

Violating our marriage vows – being unfaithful to our spouse has Spiritual consequences (as well as personal, relational, emotional, financial, familial consequences [i.e. its impact on children] as well as other collateral consequences).

Final comment? With God’s help I am determined to live by my first personal core value! The broader culture may not, but I will! (NOTE: I just reaffirmed that with Sharon, my lovely wife!)
