Don’t throw in the towel! Use it to wipe the blood, sweat and tears off your face and keep running!

Don't Throw in the towel!

Don’t know what you may be facing today… A severe trial, an unjust accusation, the results of a disaster, poverty, aching loneliness, abandonment, pain… even death! Some of those things are the very kinds of things the readers of Hebrews in your Bible were facing! Many Bible scholars believe this Biblical book was written to Jews who had put their trust in Jesus as their Messiah and then were going through “hell on earth!” The temptation they faced was to “throw in the towel,” give up, and abandon their faith in Christ Jesus as their Messiah!

So here’s the deal… if some of the issues and situations I cataloged at the beginning of the previous paragraph are things you’re facing today, I recommend that you read the following paragraph from Hebrews 10…

“And so, dear brothers and sisters, we can boldly enter heaven’s Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus. By his death, Jesus opened a new and life-giving way through the curtain into the Most Holy Place. And since we have a great High Priest who rules over God’s house, let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting Him! For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water. Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise. Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.” (Hebrews 10:19–25 New Living Translation)

Here’s the bottom line! We need the Lord! He’s the only One that can help us! And guilty sinners as we are, He has cleansed us from our sin and opened up a way for us to gain access into His presence in prayer without fear. And we also need each other! When we’re going through severe testing, temptation or trial the last thing we need to do is absence ourselves from fellow Christians and miss church! Hey, don’t throw in the towel and give up… He’s coming soon!!!

Avoiding the accusation of being just another “lazy preacher!”

A dear Facebook friend and former students responded with this comment: “Very intriguing… I would love to hear your wisdom on how a 1st time pastor can avoid falling into this trap.”

Here is my response to him: Your question was an excellent one… I remember (although it’s been a long time ago ) what it was like to work out my own cycle and expression of pastoral ministry… Sometimes I felt like I was “flying solo for the first time” – completely on my own! So I took a little while this morning and did “Bartel’s 7 + 1 guidelines of how to avoid becoming a lazy preacher.” Hope you find this helpful… “From an ol’ guy”…

1. Identify a Spiritually healthy, effective ministry mentor and be accountable to them.

2. Be faithful in prayer.

3. Be diligent in preparation and proclamation of God’s Word.

4. Be careful to serve the spiritual and nurture needs of your congregation.

5. Involve yourself personally in evangelism and discipleship.

6. Keep your Spiritual “reservoir” full through your devotional life.

7. Don’t neglect the care of your body.

8. Don’t avoid what might be considered menial tasks because “you’re too important to do them”– pitch in and fulfill the “role of a servant.”

Seeking “security?” Where you gonna find it? Big issue, don’t you think?

Seeking wealthSecurity… How to get it – where to find it – how to maintain and sustain it… A big issue in the uncertainties of our world!

This morning during my time of “coffee with the Lord” I read a passage of Scripture that puts that issue in stark contrast:

“The Name of the Lord is a strong tower!  The righteous person runs to it and is safe!  A rich man’s wealth is his strong city – like a high wall in his imagination!” (Proverbs 18:10-11)

I know what side of that issue I want to be on!  The Lord is faithful – He is enduring – He exists beyond the uncertainties of the market, currency fluctuations, capital investments, or property values.  All of those things are subject to change, decay and destruction… He is not!  Treasure in heaven is where I want to put my effort and investment (check out Matthew 6:19-20).  How about you?
