“Soul Rest” – The secret of living life from a “Quiet Center!”

Soul RestLife is stressful these days! I don’t have to remind you of that, do I? The pace of life… the atmosphere of life… the demands of family and vocation… the pressures others place upon us… all are potential “ulcer makers” and the stuff of “emotional-breakdowns.” “Burnout” is a popular term related to the cultural context in which we live today.

There is an answer! It is possible to live from a “quiet center!” Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest! Take my yoke upon you! Let me teach you! I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” (From Matthew 11:28–30 New Living Translation)

“Soul rest!” Imagine it… deep down within… a center of life that ministers peace, rest, competency, confidence, trust, and strength, in the midst of the stress-filled world we live in. Jesus provides it! Jesus teaches it! Jesus is the secret of it! (Check out verse 27 of the same passage!)

And you don’t have to be thought of as wise, influential, rich or famous to have it? In fact, my experience is, some of the poorest people, those looked upon as quite ordinary, individuals with average intellect and education (even some thought of as quite “simple,” are the very ones who possess this “secret” and exhibit it! And you know what? That is precisely what Jesus declared in this very passage! Here’s how it starts…

“At that time Jesus prayed this prayer: ‘O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank you for hiding these things from those who think themselves wise and clever, and for revealing them to the childlike! Yes, Father, it pleased you to do it this way!” (From Matthew 11:25–26 New Living Translation)

Now, a Christian therapist may be helpful in discovering and applying it to your life. But even more than a therapist, the need is Jesus! He provides the secret to this kind of life. He said, “Come to Me… Learn from Me!” I intend to do that every day in the stress producing culture I live in! I’m following Jesus! I learning from Him how to live in this “pressure cooker” world in which we live!

The FIRST request of persecuted Christians when asked how we can help them is… “PRAY FOR US!”

Persecution and PrayerThis morning during my time of “coffee with the Lord” I thought of all of those who have decided to follow Christ and have faced pressure to turn back, compromise their resolve, and faced incredible persecution! It may have happened at school, a college, or university… It may have occurred from colleagues in the workplace… former “friends” may have been the source… a prisoner who has decided to follow the Lord faithfully may experience pressure and persecution in prison… it may even come from family members. There are individuals suffering severe persecution today – even facing death for their faith today in various places in our world! Bottom line… it is often costly – very costly to follow the Lord!

Jesus warned His disciples that the decision to follow Him would be costly…

He said, “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household! Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” (Matthew 10:34–39 ESV)

But Jesus also assured His faithful followers with these words… “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered! Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows! So, everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 10:29–33 ESV)

So today, if you’re facing pressure and persecution as a result of your stand for Christ and your decision to follow Him, I spent some time praying for you! I know some of you by name! I want you to know I lifted you and your situation to the Lord in prayer! And I know there a many faithful fellow Christians that are praying around the world today for fellow Christians suffering persecution… Listen, we “bear one another’s burdens and so fulfill the ‘law of Christ!’” (Galatians 6:2) We follow the example of our Savior who looked at Simon Peter one day and uttered these words: “Simon, Simon, Satan has desired you that he might sift you as wheat! But I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail!” (Luke 22:31-32)

An apostle’s final instructions to fellow Christians headed out to live in a pagan world…

holding-tight-when-your-teen-rebelsI can still remember the moments… As a teen, I’m headed out the door for a date or on a journey, maybe headed to college… My mom is standing at the door, holding my jacket, I give her a kiss and then it happens… “the talk!” – 26 things to remember and not forget!  Warnings, admonitions, recommendations, etc.  Over the years I’ve asked my students at the university how many remember “the talk?”  Without exception they roll their eyes and every hand goes up!  I’m sure many of you reading this post have not only received “the talk” – you’ve given “the talk!”

Toward the end of Apostle Paul’s letter to the believers in Roman he gives “the talk” – Admonitions and reminders of how “justified” Christians ought to live… You see, it’s one thing to “get right with God” (i.e. be “justified”) – it’s quite another to authentically “live it out” in daily life in a “pagan” culture!  So as Apostle Paul brings his letter to the Romans to a close here is what he had to say (jacket in hand as they are about to go out the door into Roman culture as Christ followers)…

“Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them.

Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good.

Love each other with genuine affection,

Take delight in honoring each other.

Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically.

Rejoice in our confident hope.

Be patient in trouble,

Keep on praying.

When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them.

Always be eager to practice hospitality.

Bless those who persecute you. Don’t curse them; pray that God will bless them.

Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep.

Live in harmony with each other.

Don’t be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary people. And don’t think you know it all!

Never pay back evil with more evil.

Do things in such a way that everyone can see you are honorable.

Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone.

Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say, ‘I will take revenge; I will pay them back,’ says the Lord. Instead, If your enemies are hungry, feed them. If they are thirsty, give them something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals of shame on their heads.

Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.”

(From Romans 12:9–21 NLT)

I’m headed out the door this morning into a world that desperately needs the Lord!  OK!  OK! Paul, I hear you!  I really do want to “live out being ‘right with God’ – I want the “Christianity” I exhibit to be practical and authentic!  I hear you Paul!  I hear you!
