Needed: A Theology of the Body

Clean mind - Pure heaartCommitted Christians – devoted followers of Jesus – live in a culture steeped in sexual promiscuity. Anything goes… and it floods television, dominates the movie industry, the printed page does not escape it, and it is expressed openly on social media. Tragically this moral pollution influences the thinking and values of Christian adults, influences our youth, and contaminates the minds of our children. What to do? It’s everywhere!

I’ve long argued, that a desperate need within the church is a Biblical understanding of the human body – if you please, a “theology of the body”! This morning during my time of “coffee with the Lord” I read again a passage that provides a good starting point for that kind of theology! Here it is (and worth embracing as a part of our value system)…

“The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord – and the Lord for the body! … Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? … Flee from sexual immorality! Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sin against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you? You are not your own! You were bought with a price, so glorify God in your body!” (From 1 Corinthians 6:12-20)

Oh, and here’s another one… “Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body to make you obey its passions. Do not present your member to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness.” (From Romans 6:12-14)

Personally, I intend to “present my body, a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is my spiritual act of worship – I purpose not to be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of my mind, so that I may be able to discern and demonstrate the good, and acceptable and perfect will of God!” (A devotional paraphrase of Romans 12:1-2)

And our children and youth? How’s this one…. “How can a young man (or woman) keep their way pure? By guarding it according to Your word!” (Psalm 119:9). Let’s do everything we can as parents and the Church to build a tall, impenetrable fence around the minds of our youth and children with the clear, healthy teaching of God’s Word.

“Oh Lord, Increase My Faith!”

Increase my faith
So Jesus said some things that just blow me away! They leave me feeling like a spiritual midget and “wimp!” I read something like that Jesus said again today… In fact, I read it every year about this time, and every time I read it I feel the same way. Matthew records it right after Jesus’s “Triumphal Entry” to Jerusalem and after his cleansing of the temple. Here is the account of what Jesus did and said…

“In the morning, as Jesus was returning to the city, he became hungry. And seeing a fig tree by the wayside, he went to it and found nothing on it but only leaves. And he said to it, ‘May no fruit ever come from you again!’ And the fig tree withered at once! When the disciples saw it, they marveled, saying, ‘How did the fig tree wither at once?’ And Jesus answered them, ‘TRULY, I SAY TO YOU, IF YOU HAVE FAITH AND DO NOT DOUBT, YOU WILL NOT ONLY DO WHAT HAS BEEN DONE TO THE FIG TREE, BUT EVEN IF YOU SAY TO THIS MOUNTAIN, ‘BE TAKEN UP AND THROWN INTO THE SEA,’ IT WILL HAPPEN. AND WHATEVER YOU ASK IN PRAYER, YOU WILL RECEIVE, IF YOU HAVE FAITH.’” (From Matthew 21:18–22 ESV)

Now here’s a working definition of faith that I use… “Faith is confidence in God… trusting His character, believing and obeying His word, embracing His promises, following His leadership, drawing upon his encouragement and strength.”

This passage, it seems to me, emphasizes what I would call the “initiative of faith.” In other words, there is the possibility of miraculous things happening as devoted obedient followers of Jesus “exercise their faith.” Hey, Jesus declared it – I didn’t!!

I don’t know about you, but I want that in my life more than it exists right now! My wife and I had a conversation about it this morning after our time of devotions… I said, “I need more faith! I need faith like that!” And she said, “Me too!” How about you? Oh Lord, “increase our faith!” (Luke 17:5-6)

An Offer from God… Don’t Delay!

Special Offer - Act NowThis morning during “Coffee with the Lord” I read a wonderful passage of Scripture – Isaiah 55! As I read it I thought of some advertising I’ve seen that corresponds to it in many ways. The fact is, the advertising for this comes from God through His spokesman, prophet Isaiah. The advertising might go like this…

INCREDIBLE OFFER AND IT’S OFFERED FREE!

“Come, everyone who thirsts! Come to the waters! He who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price! Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. Incline your ear, and come to me; hear, that your soul may live! I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love!” (verses 1-3)

THIS OFFER IS AVAILABLE FOR ONLY A LIMITED TIME! YOU MUST ACT NOW!

“Seek the LORD while he may be found! Call upon him while he is near! Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the LORD, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon! (verses 6-7)

THINK THIS OFFER IS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE? IT’S A VERIFIED OFFER BY MANY WHO HAVE ALREADY CLAIMED IT! THE FAITHFUL, ALMIGHTY GOD, HIMSELF STANDS BEHIND IT!

“For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall My word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty! But it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it! [God!] (verses 10-11)

STILL THINK IT’S TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE?

God Himself speaks… “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD! For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts!” (verses 8-9)

Hey, here’s one voice testifying to the fact that God is good on delivering on this offer! I’ve tried it and He’s has good as His word!
