Hey, It’s Easter Morning! “Tell Me the Story of Jesus!”

I got up this Easter morning and enjoyed a wonderful time of Bible reading, reflection, worship and prayer. Easter is always a time for me of rehearsing and reflecting on “the wonderful story of Jesus” – beginning to end – from His coming to our earth in Bethlehem to His promise to come again. It includes His sinless, awesome life, His ministry and teaching, but also His death, burial, resurrection and ascension to the Heavenly Father’s right hand! A wonderful story! A life-transforming story! Everyone needs to hear it! We all profit from reflecting upon it!

As I did that again this Easter morning an old ageless hymn, written by Fanny Crosby came to mind… “Tell Me the Story of Jesus.” Here are the lyrics… And I’ve also posted a link to a YouTube of Carmen presenting the song and its story to a mixed audience … children, youth, adults and older adults… Hey we all need the reminder! Enjoy!

1. Tell me the story of Jesus,
Write on my heart every word;
Tell me the story most precious,
Sweetest that ever was heard.
Tell how the angels in chorus,
Sang as they welcomed His birth,
“Glory to God in the highest!
Peace and good tidings to earth.”

Refrain:
Tell me the story of Jesus,
Write on my heart every word;
Tell me the story most precious,
Sweetest that ever was heard.

2. Fasting alone in the desert,
Tell of the days that are past,
How for our sins He was tempted,
Yet was triumphant at last.
Tell of the years of His labor,
Tell of the sorrow He bore;
He was despised and afflicted,
Homeless, rejected and poor.

3. Tell of the cross where they nailed Him,
Writhing in anguish and pain;
Tell of the grave where they laid Him,
Tell how He liveth again.
Love in that story so tender,
Clearer than ever I see;
Stay, let me weep while you whisper,
“Love paid the ransom for me.”

4. Tell how He’s gone back to heaven,
Up to the right hand of God:
How He is there interceding
While on this earth we must trod.
Tell of the sweet Holy Spirit
He has poured out from above;
Tell how He’s coming in glory
For all the saints of His love.

Good Friday… Tell me, how can something so gruesome be “Good?”

Good Friday“Good Friday” … How can it be? The day that Jesus died in agony, infamy, unjustly accused, and for my sin – for the sin of the whole world!

During my Bible reading this morning during “coffee with the Lord” I was reminded of why He died… for the sin of us all! Psalm 38 expresses our condition well…

“For my iniquities have gone over my head; like a heavy burden, they are too heavy for me! … But for You, O Lord, do I wait! It is You, O Lord my God, Who will answer. … I confess [acknowledge] my iniquity; I am sorry for my sin! … Do not forsake me, O Lord! O my God, be not far from me! Make haste to help me, O Lord, my salvation!” (From Psalm 38)

I’ve got to tell you, those inspired words from David, describe perfectly how I felt when I became aware of my sinfulness!
But there is an answer, and that is why we call it “Good Friday!”

“Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows! Yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God and afflicted. He was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with His wounds we are healed! All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned – every one of us – to his own way; and the Lord has laid upon Him the iniquity of us all!” (From Isaiah 53:4-6)

“Now I would remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are saved… I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sin in accordance with the Scriptures, the He was buried, and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures!” (1 Corinthians 15:1-4)

Yes… “Good News!” – the “Gospel!” “Good Friday!” There is an answer – a solution – for my sin, for all of our sin! The sacrifice – the death – of the sinless “Lamb of God,” Jesus Christ, on the cross! He died for our sin, He was buried, and rose from the dead! Praise the Lord! “Good Friday!”

Our ordinary contrasts… Like “black and white” – But how about “black and brilliance?” Imagine it!

Black and whiteContrasts… We get used to the usual ones… Try these on for size: Black and ??? Rich and ??? Wise and ??? Young and ???

What contrasting words came to your mind? White? Poor? Foolish? Old? Well then, you pretty normal… That’s what most people would choose.

But occasionally in the Bible you come across a surprising contrast. How about this one… Wicked and ???

Did you choose “righteous?” I did! But in Psalm 36 that is not what David chose, inspired as he was by the Holy Spirit… He chose a surprising, but wonderful, contrast! He reached way past our human, usual way of thinking, all the way to God’s impeccable, holy, character for his contrast to the wickedness of man… He chose God’s “steadfast love” – His covenant keeping love – to use the Hebrew word, His “Hesed!”

Here’s the contrast, right out of the Bible…

The wicked… “Transgression speaks to the wicked deep in his heart! There is no fear of God before his eyes! For he flatters himself in his own eyes that his iniquity cannot be found out and hated. The words of his mouth are trouble and deceit; he has ceased to act wisely and do good. He plots trouble while on his bed; he sets himself in a way that is not good; he does not reject evil.” (Psalm 36:1–4 ESV)

And the surprising, stunning, contrast? Not the way of “the righteous” – a human contrast! Instead the “steadfast love” – the covenant keeping love – the “Hesed” of God!

“Your steadfast love, O LORD, extends to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds! Your righteousness is like the mountains of God; your judgments are like the great deep; man and beast you save, O LORD. How precious is your steadfast love, O God! The children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of your wings. They feast on the abundance of your house, and you give them drink from the river of your delights. For with you is the fountain of life; in your light do we see light. Oh, continue your steadfast love to those who know you, and your righteousness to the upright of heart!” (Psalm 36:5–10 ESV)

Oh what a contrast! I’m stunned by it – but relishing it, savoring it, embracing it today! In fact it brings an old hymn to mind…

“The love of God is greater far
Than tongue or pen can ever tell;
It goes beyond the highest star,
And reaches to the lowest hell;
The guilty pair, bowed down with care,
God gave His Son to win;
His erring child He reconciled,
And pardoned from his sin.

Refrain:
“Oh, love of God, how rich and pure!
How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure—
The saints’ and angels’ song.

“Could we with ink the ocean fill,
And were the skies of parchment made,
Were every stalk on earth a quill,
And every man a scribe by trade;
To write the love of God above
Would drain the ocean dry;
Nor could the scroll contain the whole,
Though stretched from sky to sky.”
–Frederick Lehman

What a contrast, eh?
