Moral purity… A big deal for Christians according to Apostle Paul!

Purity
I just read news of another professing Christian (a person of influence) who has decided to follow the whims of culture regarding morality and abandon their faith in Christ… I’m grieving!!! Who will we listen to anyway – the cultural relativists or the clear standards of God’s inspired word, the Bible?

For me, I’ll take the inspired words of Apostle Paul on the issue found in Scripture!

So here’s what I read in my Bible this morning during my time of “coffee with the Lord”…

Finally, then… we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God, that you do so more and more. For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus. For this is the will of God, your sanctification: THAT YOU ABSTAIN FROM SEXUAL IMMORALITY; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles [those] who do not know God; that no one transgress and wrong his brother [fellow Christian] in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we told you beforehand and solemnly warned you. FOR GOD HAS NOT CALLED US FOR IMPURITY, BUT IN HOLINESS. Therefore whoever disregards this, disregards not man but God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you.” (From 1 Thessalonians 4:1–8 ESV)

What is there about that passage that is not clearly understood?

Listen, I know that we are all fallen creatures – sinners in need of a Savior! That’s why the same apostle who wrote the passage above also wrote this to the believers in sinful Corinth…

“Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. AND SUCH WERE SOME OF YOU. BUT YOU WERE WASHED, YOU WERE SANCTIFIED, YOU WERE JUSTIFIED IN THE NAME OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST AND BY THE SPIRIT OF OUR GOD.” (1 Corinthians 6:9–11 ESV)

Thank God for His redeeming grace and forgiveness! … But God’s “grace” can never be used as an excuse to go on sinning! (Romans 6:1-4)

Complete self-reliance is filled with risks… It leaves God completely out of the picture!

Arrogant Self relianceSelf-reliance is a culturally esteemed trait… Biblically, however, it is a trait filled with all kinds of spiritual (and practical) risks – in fact it leads to sin!  Hey, complete self-reliance means “You’re on your own, baby!” with all the consequences of that!  It completely rules out the guidance and help of God!

This morning during my Bible reading I read a very significant passage written by a VERY successful person in that regard, King Solomon…

The passage begins… “Unless the Lord…”

Here’s what Solomon had to say on the subject (the passage is attributed to him)… “UNLESS THE LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.  UNLESS THE LORD watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.  It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for He gives to His beloved sleep.” (Psalm 127:1-2)

Now if anyone could have demonstrated complete self-reliance, I guess it could have been Solomon!  He was the incredibly successful son of Israel’s seminal king – King David.  He was incredibly powerful and wealthy (read 1 Kings 3-4 in your Bible – it will blow you away!).  And wise?  This is what the Bible has to say, “Solomon excelled all the kings of the earth in riches and in wisdom.  The whole earth sought the presence of Solomon to hear his wisdom, which God had put into his mind.” (1 Kings 10:23-24… but read the whole passage – 1 Kings 10!)  Queen of Sheba visited him and was completely blown away by his wisdom, riches and success!  He was the one who built “the house” (the Temple) spoken of in Psalm 127:1.  As king, he was responsible for the security and safety of Jerusalem, as well as the combined nations of Israel and Judah!

Self-reliant?  No, early in his reign King Solomon was wise enough to say, “UNLESS THE LORD…”  Sadly, later in his life he became sinfully self-reliant – and it led to his failure and defeat!

In the New Testament James gives this warning… “Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go into such a city and spend a year there and trade and make a profit’ – Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring.  What is your life?  For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.  Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.’  As it is, you boast in your arrogance.  All such boasting is evil.” (James 4:13-16)

You know what?  With Solomon, I want to be wise enough to make “Unless the Lord…” my watchword!

Trying to communicate the Gospel effectively?…Apostle Paul’s advice: Don’t forget the importance of prayer!

Preacher praying.jpgAnyone in the Lord’s work “worth their salt” understands the importance of prayer for effectiveness in the communication of the gospel! It makes all the difference in the world!

Without prayer, study may be thorough, preparation may be exhaustive, the strategy may be flawless, the communication tools utilized may be attention grabbing… but the eternal impact is likely to be missing! Mere performance, sheen, an attractive rhetorical show, a media masterpiece, but absent Holy Spirit impact is all that it is – merely a human effort!

Gotta have prayer! The human communicator must bathe study, preparation, strategy development, and the crafting of the communication opportunity with prayer! A wise communicator of the Gospel, however, will do more. He or she (or the creative team facilitating the communication) will solicit all the prayer support they can get!

I read Apostle Paul’s philosophy and practice on this subject this morning during my time of “coffee with the Lord” … Here’s what He said,..

“Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving! At the same time pray for us, that God may open us doors for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, for which I am in prison [how’s that for a communication opportunity?!] that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak!” (From Colossians 4:2-4)

Hey I’ve experienced it both ways! A beautifully crafted human effort devoid of what prayer brings (we sometimes call it the “anointing”) and the result is only what mere human effort can produce – little eternal results and a lot of human pride and applause. On the other hand, in humility I’ve bowed my knees and implored God to empower by the Holy Spirit and sought all the prayer support I could get… And the result? Supernatural! Lives transformed by God’s power and a rich Spiritual harvest! I’ll take the later outcome any day over mere human skill and effort!

So my advice to anyone seeking to communicate God’s word and proclaim the Gospel effectively? Pray! Pray!! Pray!!! Bathe your study, your preparation, your strategy development, your presentation in prayer! Solicit all the prayer you can get! Build a great team of prayers to support your efforts for the glory of God! Apostle Paul did it and that’s good enough for me!
