R U using “GPS” (God-directed Positioning System) in your journey through life?
Now, I’ve used “GPS” (global positioning system) on several trips I’ve taken. I can tell you, it’s helpful… but not infallible! A time or two it’s gotten me where I did NOT want to go. You got stories too?
When it’s working properly a satellite in the sky with a perspective far better than yours, tracks your position on with a sensor. All the possible routes to the destination you’ve indicated you want to travel have been programed into the application, you’re given some travel options, the GPS tracks your progress and the pretty voice of a navigator directs your travel. Often there is a preferred route that you can take and several other options, including one referred to as “the shortest route.” The challenge is… are you going to trust that thing and follow that “pretty little voice.”
Now I’ve discovered something (from some frustrating and disappointing experiences) … the GPS option referred to as “the shortest route” is not always the best route… Roads under construction; winding, single lane, poorly maintained roads, dangerous roads, roads that take you through every little burg with a speed limit of 25 MPH and a cop trying his best to reach his “quota”…
Thought about all of that today as I read these words in the Bible about the children of Israel as they traveled to “the promised land” – the wonderful place God had said he would take them after delivering them from slavery in Egypt… “When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near (i.e. the “shortest” route). For God said, ‘lest the people change their minds when they see war and return to Egypt.’ But God led the people around by the way of the wilderness toward the Red Sea.” (Exodus 13.17-18)
Christians have an infallible GPS (“God-directed Positioning System”)! Believe me, God knows what He is doing! He knows precisely where you are at! He knows every detail of your life! He knows the roadway! He knows what is best for you! He knows the end from the beginning. He knows the shortest route is not always the best route! Our challenge? Trusting His voice – trusting His word – depending on his infallible perspective! I’ve tried a few shortcuts… Disappointing! Dangerous!! Even disastrous!!! Got to trust Him… No turning back!!
